Rae (FKA Rachel) is a freelance playwright and screenwriter based in Narrm. They are currently developing 'An Exhaustive Treatise on Queer Desire' under commission with the Malthouse Theatre, Unicorn Hunters for Screen Australia and SBS with producer Tessa Mansfield-Hung, and Next Big Thing with show creator Michele Lee.
Rae was the inaugural winner of Malthouse Theatre's Playwriting Innovation award. Unicorn Hunters was selected to be one of six projects given development funding as part of Digital Originals and their new theatre work HYDRA, shortlisted for the Queensland Premier's Drama Award, premiered in July 2021 at Northcote Town Hall.
They have a long-standing theatre-making partnership with Bridget Balodis under the moniker 'Double Water Sign'. With Bridget, they have made MORAL PANIC (Darebin Arts, 2018), GROUND CONTROL (Next Wave Festival 2016), and ANGRY SEXX (Melbourne Fringe 2014). Between them, these works have been nominated for 9 Green Room Awards.
In 2018 Rae spent three months in New York City investigating downtown dramaturgy under the mentorship of Sibyl Kempson, Erin Markey, and Tina Satter through the support of The Australia Council and the American Australian Association.
In 2017 they traveled to Dublin to take part in ‘The Next Stage’ as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, they were artist in residence at LAB-14, and In 2014 they were the winner of the Melbourne Festival Discovery Award.
Rae also has an excellent day job working for experience design company Sandpit as their content strategist. In that role, they get to work with a surprising amount of paleontologists and travel all over Australia and the world.
